The Recycled Pavilion: an inspiring outcome of a multidisciplinary ASP project

Designed by a group of ASP students from the XX Cycle over the course of eight months, the project was led by academic tutor Prof. Alberto Collet, in collaboration with Prof. Miguel Nazar, Director of Arquitectura Universidad del Desarrollo, Prof. Manfredo Di Robilant and Davide Bardini, from Politecnico di Torino, as well as Teatro Biobío, and under the patronage of the Italian Cultural Institute of Santiago.

Between March 1–8, 2024, the Pavilion took shape in Concepción, Chile, through joint work with students of Universidad del Desarrollo and skilled local technicians. Designed as a dynamic and sustainable intervention for REC–Rock en Conce, Chile’s most important rock music festival, the Pavilion featured:

  • A modular outdoor structure installed in front of Teatro Biobío
  • An interior gallery for exhibiting works by local artisans
  • Reused and repurposed materials, embracing a circular design philosophy

Its success exceeded expectations: due to high public interest and alignment with REC’s values, the festival’s organizers have requested to reconstruct the Pavilion in a new location!

In recognition of the project’s cultural significance, the Italian Ambassador in Santiago, Valeria Biagiotti, welcomed Prof. Collet and a group of ASP students, reinforcing the role of international collaboration in academic and design excellence.

Learning by building is essential,” said Prof. Collet. “These real-world challenges teach how systems and materials interact in practice, bridging theory and hands-on experience.”
