Re-ImPlant: Re-use Industrial Plants

Today, the occurring shift inside an economic model in crisis, a digitalized production process and the necessity of a re-organized energy model underline the importance of industrial production as a key factor of innovation inside the development of our city. A good city has also industry inside, the goal of the project is to investigate how the industrial tissue can respond to the crucial issue for sustainable land and urban development, developing mixed-use zoning where production and life are connected. Adaptive reuse is the most sustainable form of reuse, as it is based on maximal conservation of built assets, minimizing time, materials and embodied energy waste and preserving industrial heritage and identity.
The project will define and test on a real case study an holistic approach to the regeneration of dismissed industrial sites. It will be supported by management disciplines that deal with urban systems, focusing on the relationship between real estate, finance, and policymaking. The case-study site chosen for the experimentation is the ex-industrial plant of Acciaierie Lucchini, the last steel plant appeared on the municipality of Settimo Torinese and symbol of a glorious industrial past, almost buried today.
