The project advances systemic macro-regional studies extended to Lombardia and Piemonte to address problems such as transportation and its congestion, the geographic disparity between work and residence, suburbs and sprawl, if the macro-region is likely to convey investment, create new jobs and improve the quality of life.
This regional systemic approach has to consider present and coming forms of transportation, communication, and a study of economics, planning and geography.
To face these challenging issues the project, with the support of the Laboratorio di Alta Qualità – Progetto Territoriale Integrato of the Politecnico di Torino, puts forward the state of the art in the simulation models at urban and regional scale. These models are based on the simulation of the micro- and macro-dynamics by either cellular automata or software agents, and have been tested in a number of cases both in Italy and Europe.
Given the complexity of the regional dynamic, the amount of variables that are to be considered, and the decades timeframe, it is evident that prediction is inappropriate ambition. Instead regional simulation is an effective way to put forth possible future scenarios. Scenarios are possible futures that are based on what already exists and on the projects and policies of the public decision-makers who participate in.
