SO3AS: Smart catalytic-based system for abatement of polluting ozone at room temperature

Ozone is the main component of photochemical smog. Not only it is extremely harmful, possibly causing chronic lung diseases, but also very difficult to abate, as it is formed in air by precursor pollutants (NOx, VOCs). In this context, the project SO3AS aims at designing a catalytic device for ozone abatement for indoor air purification. The choice of the catalyst, the reactor configuration, and the operating conditions are based on state of the art analysis and numerical simulations of the device performance. In this phase, collaboration with GRINP S.r.l. helped evaluate some alternatives, in particular concerning feasibility analysis. In parallel, a market analysis was performed. The considered market drivers were pollution levels, regulations, and people’s consciousness about ozone pollution by means of a questionnaire. As a result, California and northern Italy were selected for further investigation with different approaches, as in the former a market already exists, whereas in the latter it has to be created. The results gathered entail that a commercialization of such a device is possible upon creating awareness about the problem of ozone pollution and contribution of local administrations. Following this path, indoor ozone abatement will improve comfort and safeguard people’s health.
